Punda
Punda is the oldest part of Willemstad, on the eastern side of St. Anna Bay. It contains the famous Handelskade, compact shopping streets, terraces and historic façades. The district is easy to explore on foot. Cross the Queen Emma pontoon bridge to Otrobanda; when the bridge opens for ships, a ferry generally provides the crossing. Wander into the side streets as well, where murals, small shops and quieter squares add another side to the city.
Otrobanda
Otrobanda literally means “the other side” and sits opposite Punda. Its less formal street plan gives it a different character: narrow lanes, slopes, restored buildings and residential streets sit side by side. Brionplein and Rif Fort are busier, while a few streets inland feel much more local. Crossing the pontoon bridge between Otrobanda and Punda is the easiest way to experience both sides of the harbour in one walk.
Pietermaai
Pietermaai lies east of Punda and has become one of Willemstad’s best-known areas for boutique hotels, restaurants and bars. Colorful historic buildings give the neighborhood character, and it becomes particularly lively from late afternoon into the evening. Central Pietermaai is walkable from Punda. It is a strong base for travelers who value city atmosphere and dining more than having a large resort beach outside the door.
Scharloo
Scharloo sits on the northern side of the Waaigat and is known for grand merchant houses, bright colors and a growing collection of street art. Its history gives it a noticeably different streetscape from Punda and Otrobanda. For visitors it works well as a shorter architecture and photography walk, combined with Punda and the harbour area. Daylight is best for appreciating the façades and murals.
Parking and walking
Willemstad is easiest to enjoy on foot after parking once. Choose where to park based on the district where you want to start rather than moving the car for every sight. Punda and Otrobanda are linked by the Queen Emma Bridge, while Pietermaai is walkable from Punda. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and save longer walks for the cooler morning or late afternoon.
Willemstad at night
Willemstad changes character in the late afternoon. Temperatures ease, the waterfront façades light up and terraces and restaurants in Pietermaai and the central districts become busier. A good evening combines a walk along St. Anna Bay with dinner in Punda, Otrobanda or Pietermaai. Check the local program as the city regularly hosts music, cultural events and evening activities.
