Jan Thiel is on the eastern side of Willemstad, so trips to Christoffel Park and the western beaches take longer. Choose it for comfort and atmosphere rather than complete seclusion.
Willemstad and Pietermaai: culture, restaurants and city life
Stay in Willemstad if you want more than a beach vacation. Punda, Otrobanda and Pietermaai offer colorful architecture, cafés, restaurants, shops and historic streets. Pietermaai is especially attractive for travelers who like boutique hotels and being able to walk out for dinner.
You will need a car or taxi for many beaches, but the Queen Emma Bridge, Handelskade and city restaurants are right on your doorstep. On a longer trip, splitting your stay between Willemstad and a beach area works very well.

A rental car is useful because fewer restaurants and attractions are within walking distance than in Pietermaai or Jan Thiel. For families and couples who like a calm hotel base and want to explore by day, that can be ideal.
Westpunt and Coral Estate: nature, quiet and western beaches
The western side of Curaçao feels noticeably quieter. From Westpunt you are close to Playa Kalki, Grote Knip, Kleine Knip and Playa Lagun, as well as Christoffel Park and Shete Boka. Coral Estate lies farther south and offers a quieter resort setting.
Choose this part of the island if snorkeling, diving and peaceful bays matter more than nightlife. A rental car is almost essential. First-time visitors can combine a few nights here with Willemstad or Jan Thiel for the best of both worlds.
One hotel or two bases?
For a one-week vacation, one well-chosen hotel is usually the most relaxing option. With ten to fourteen days, a split stay can be worth it: for example a few nights in Willemstad or Jan Thiel followed by the west coast.
Changing hotels does take time, so only do it when the second location genuinely changes the experience rather than simply moving a few kilometers.
